Vitamin D May Slow Biological Aging, Study Finds - Everyday Health Interview

I spoke with Tom Gavin of Everyday Health in an interview about a new study analyzing over 25,000 women and men within a 4 year period. They were given vitamin D and omega'3 supplements to see if this had an impact on Telomere length.

Telomeres are located the ends of chromosomes (a coiled structure carrying our genetic info). At the very end of these chromosomes (X, Y, or Singular) there are caps, like caps on a pen, and these caps are called telomeres. These telomeres or caps have repeated sequence of DNA tightly enclosed in them. These telomeres or caps tend to get shorter as we age, so, if you compare telomeres of young children to older adults the caps will be taller for younger children and shorter for older adults.

So what's the big deal if our telomeres get shorter? This significantly increases cellular aging and risk for cancer, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disease and overall mortality.

What do you think the study results showed? Was vitamin D in combination with an omega-3 supplement, or Vitamin D alone able to slow down or preserve the length of telomeres? Read the full interview to find out more!

Before you start taking a supplement, it is important that you get blood work done and get evaluated by your healthcare team, including your Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
